This crisis demonstrates beyond doubt that a global capital market requires much stronger global cooperation and supervision and we need to ensure that we have an effective global early warning system to alert us across continents to economic and financial risks, we need globally accepted standards of supervision that apply equally in all countries, we need stronger arrangements for a cross-border supervision of global firms, and if we have learned anything, much stronger institutions for cooperation and concerted action in a crisis.

Hoje, perante a grave crise mundial, surge como o líder europeu e mundial mais bem preparado para lidar com a situação.

Enquanto uns titubeiam, e na Europa são muitos, Brown aponta caminhos de saída, que passam, como não podia deixar de ser, por coordenação internacional e não actuação à escala nacional. Pena que outros líderes europeus, e mais europeístas que Brown, não tenham a mesma leitura.

Não deixa de ser curioso este "renascer político" de quem estava à beira de uma queda abissal. Mas, ao fim e ao cabo, Brown destacou-se como grande político na qualidade de artífice financeiro-económico do New Labour. Agora está a demonstrar as suas qualidades, numas águas políticas, como as financeiras-económicas, nas quais se sente e move como peixe.
